~ At the Cross ~

I was walking in town that day,

When I heard some people say,

“Who’s that man with all those soldiers?

He’s carrying a big cross on his shoulders.”

“His name is Jesus,” someone replied.

He claims to be the Son of God.”

“Son of God? How can that be?

He should die on Calvary!”

I saw Him coming along the path,

At the mercy of the soldiers’ wrath.

Beaten and scourged, He looked so weak.

When He reached me, He fell at my feet.

With loving eyes, He looked at me,

And through my tears, I could see

A lovely glow upon His face.

Right then, I felt His saving grace.

“I’ll take her, I’ll pay her debt”,

The man called Jesus calmly said.

“Take off that heavy robe of sin,

You won’t be wearing it again.”

I ran along the path with Him

And, as He passed, I saw the sin

Of others He was taking on.

They were weak, but He was strong

With tearful eyes, I watched Him carry t

Tat heavy cross, though He was weary.

Some people cried, but others yelled

“Blasphemer!” and kicked Him when he fell.

I watched as He walked on His way

To Calvary where they made Him lay

Upon that cross.  Then they nailed his feet

And hands to make the job complete.

They raised Him up between two thieves.

Though I saw many people leave,

I stayed right there, I couldn’t go.

My heart was breaking for Him so.

A crown of thorns upon His head,

The storm clouds brewed; soon He’d be dead.

“Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

It is over.” Then, He died…for me and you.

Yes, He died that day at Calvary,

But death did not hold victory.

He rose again.  He lives today.

He is the Truth, the Light and the Way.

For God so loved the world,

that He gave his only begotten Son,

that whosoever believes in Him,

shall not perish, but have Everlasting life.

John 3:16
